(I have added the Anchors of the SMT branch (also known as Amala). It's made of multiple semi-independent sub-branches, so multiple Anchors were required.)

On 'Generations' and 'Eras'

The Generations listed in the List of Looping Universes' Notes column serve as a (necessarily vague) indicator of at what stage within the Infinite Loops' timeline the applicable universe began Looping. The '1st Generation' constitutes the very first universes that began Looping, and are otherwise known as the 'Original Seven'.

The original, and purportedly the default set of definitions for this list's purpose, hearkens back to this explanation - and this adjustment - early in the SpaceBattles' Infinite Loops. Given the long, long course of keystone events since those times, the new, more accurate and better-known definition is based on this revision/update a couple of years later.

As a result of the Infinite Loops' timeline having since expanded, the practice of enumerating Generations has largely fallen out of practice (with the exception of pre-Crash Generations). It is now far more common - and practical - to list that universe's Era instead.

For the record, here are the numbered Generations and Eras as of the current time. Note that the numbered Generations in the List of Looping Universes' Notes column may align with the original explanation, and thus be inaccurate under contemporary definitions.

Era / Generation Definition / Explanation Notes
Original Seven Era: 1st Generation The Era's beginning dates back to the first Loops of the Ranma 1/2 universe; it ends with the First Crash, and several Loopers of the time subsequently meeting each other.

As such, the 1st Generation pertains to the Original Seven.

As a wild, mad and licentious Era, this time remains nebulous and without greater exposition in the ILP. This remains the case by community consensus.
Early Pre-Crash Era: 2nd Generation Formally beginning with the First Crash, the defining differentiation between the Pre-Crash Era and the Original Seven Era is the occurrence of Fused Loops and Safe Mode Loops.

However, this Era is best known for the emergence of the first universes explicitly set Looping by Yggdrasil's various pantheons - who by this point had begun getting organized and assigning among their number specific universes to Administrate.

Much of the initial confusion over the numbering of Generations can be attributed to the adjustment effectively folding the originally defined 2nd Generation (that is, those non-O7 universes which purportedly began Looping before the Admins started getting organised - since retconned) under the then-3rd Generation's definition.

Out-of-universe, this timeframe is generally applied to those universes which where set Looping at the height of the Innortal-era.

Early Pre-Crash Era: 3rd Generation Something of a nebulous, hump-period within the Infinite Loops' timeline. Those universes of this Generation are considered to have been Looping for a substantive time before MLP's initialization, but not as long as the more ancient 2nd Generation universes.

Perhaps the defining element of the 3rd Generation is that it was during this period of the Pre-Crash Era that the earlier licentious nature of the Infinite Loops began to tone down in earnest.

Out-of universe and in practice, this 'Generation' of the Pre-Crash Era is applied to (1) those threads on the SpaceBattles forums which significantly predated the Miscellaneous thread, and (2) those universes which were 'set Looping' by unconnected writers on FFN prior to MLP Loops.
Mid Pre-Crash Era: 4th Generation Best described as 'the MLP Generation' - and essentially beginning with MLP's initialization - this part of the Pre-Crash Era in particular is reputed for its general stability - at least, in comparison to those preceding this Era.

This phase of the Pre-Crash Era can be considered to have ended with the Ascension of Kaname Madoka - the first recorded instance of a destroyed universe in the Infinite Loops - and the emergence of Malicious Looping Entities (MLE's) within the Infinite Loops.

This Era is essentially where the SpaceBattles-era Loops began.

As a corollary - both of the MLP universe's subject matter and of the site which hosted it - this is where the hedonistic tendencies of the Innortal-era are considered to have died out apart from the odd straggler.

Late Pre-Crash Era: 5th Generation Kicked off with Madoka's Ascension, this part of the Pre-Crash Era more emphasizes the inherently high-stakes nature of the Infinite Loops. Features include the Malicious Looping Entities, such as PMMM's Kyubey (who facilitated Madoka's Ascension), as well as increased tensions brought with the concrete discovery that destroying one's own universe was actually, legitimately possible.

In keeping with those tensions, the culmination of the Pre-Crash Era was the actual, conceptual destruction of an entire Looping universe and everything even vaguely connected to it: The Crash.

Kaname Madoka's Ascension marks the point at which the SpaceBattles-era Infinite Loops begins to truly differentiate itself from its Innortal-era inspiration.

A common feature and mechanic of the Innortal-era Loops was for various in-universe 'Administrator' deities to implant the seeds of 'divinity' within their favored Anchors and/or Loopers, with the eventual goal of causing them to Ascend to Admin-level deities themselves. The primary effect of the Madoka Ascension was retconning this state of affairs.

The Crash Era: 6th (Crash) Generation 'The Crash Generation': those universes and Loopers which began either with, or as a result of The Crash.

Many of these universes suffered varying levels of glitching and general instability, due to the unplanned nature of their initialization.

The Crash is the second true hard-point of continuity across all 'Generation'/'Era' systems of definition.

For obvious reasons, this is the shortest of the 'Eras'.

Early Post-Crash Era: 7th Generation Those universes which can be identified as having begun Looping distinctly after and without connection to the 'Crash Generation', are considered to align with this Era.

The 'ending' of this Generation is particularly vague, but generally is considered to align with a small cluster of events. Notable among them was a serious Crash within MLP, which fell before the Great Battle of Pelennor but after Doctor Who's initialization.

This is the latest point to which the original Generation system stretches.
Late Post-Crash Era: 8th Generation More of an unofficial Era than anything else, this 'Generation' is designated for those universes that began Looping after the MLP Crash, but before the prolonged event known as 'Hurricane Billy'.

Characterized (much as with the rest of the Post-Crash Era) by a proliferation of minor glitches running to various themes (such as the Squirrel Glitch and the Bee Virus).

Post-Hurricane Era: 9th Generation Beginning properly with the formal designation of Billy (of Grimm Adventures fame) as an MLE. Its ending is far less well-defined, but Leman Russ' and Nyx Sparkle's engagement can reasonably be considered the natural end-point. Logically, the Era's true ending would be the point at which the Restoration was conceived. Given that this happened Admin-side, this is obviously much harder to pinpoint.

Out-of-universe, some timeline-uncertainly exists concerning events within the Era. (Per existing content of the time, the Edit actually predated Hurricane Billy.)

Pre-Restoration Era: 10th Generation Largely forms around the arc of 'The Wedding's lead-up and execution - that is, the wedding of Leman Russ to Nyx Sparkle. However, it officially culminates and ends with the Restoration of the Mitakihara Branch (PMMM).

The Wedding was the second of three events which marked the end of the Era, the first of which was the Worlds Unite expansion-arc of Sonic/Mega Man.

Post-Restoration Era: 11th Generation This is the most current of the Eras, having only 'recently' begun with the Restoration of Mitakihara (PMMM). Thus far, it's a little early to say how this Era will go.

That said, it has been characterized by a couple events already. The preeminent event thus far has been the Tale of Two Sisters. A couple of further weddings have also been notably conducted in various universes.
